As I get older, I'm realizing that I need to listen to my body more because for the most part it tells me when something's wrong and even when I'm doing something right. For instance since I've started on this weight loss journey (because it truly is a journey), my body has informed me that sugar and wheat are not my friends. Suprisingly, my body doesn't like it when I drink too much water either. The reason I know this is because:
*When I eat sugar or sugar filled products ( even if its fruit (and I definitely can't have anything with high fructose corn syrup) my body feels sluggish. I then crave more sugar and my pee is a brighter yellow. Craving more sweets just perpetuates the weight gain cycle. Ughhh!
* I can't eat nitrates (cold cuts or hotdogs are a no-no!), I'll get a massive migraine and throw up.
*If I eat wheat bread or any bread or pasta- forget it the scale will say that I'm 5 pounds over my previous weight from that morning. My belly will puff out like Santa (not a good look)
*Sweet potatoes or even white potatoes in moderation don't seem to have the same effect. But I know my body will not let me eat them everyday.
*Water is a tricky one! Depending on whatever else I eat, I can predict my body's reaction to water. If I eat a lot of salt or sugar and try to drink a lot of water to flush it out then forget it-I'll be bloated and the scale will say that I'm 5 pds overweight from my weigh-in that morning.
*Sleep-if I don't get 7 to 8 hours of sleep, then my body will also retain water and my brain will be a bit sluggish. However, if I sleep more than 8 hours then I feel slovenly and extremely hunger and I'll have a tendency to binge eat on that particular day.
*Stress-makes me gassy, constipated, bloated and retain water. Simple as that.
*If I eat only when I'm hungry and exclude sugar and high sodium products then my body responds very well. My skin glows, my mind is less sluggish, I have more energy, and my body will then respond well to water. Water will actually quench my thirst rather than have me drinking with a sense of dry mouth, seeking more water. I'll urinate more frequently-leaving me with a very light pee color. Yippeee!
There are a few other signals my body gives me as well but I think I've TMI-ed you to death. So, think about your own body and how it reacts to the foods you eat and how you treat it. I believe this is the first step to losing weight and most importantly-getting healthy.
Sooo, what's your body telling you???

My body tells me when I eat too much. I feel bloated.
My body tells me when I get too much caffeine. My heart beats too fast.
My body tells me when I eat in moderation. I feel great.
Oh yeah, I totally forgot about caffeine-my heart beats faster.
Hot water and lemon helps with the bloating and not eating a lot helps too.
